The Jomag Take #039 Introvert
THE JOMAG TAKE #039 I am an Introvert (hindi lang halata)
Business as it really is.
The Power of Being an Introvert
In a culture that celebrates pakikisama, loud gatherings, and high-energy personalities, it’s easy to think something is wrong with you if you prefer quiet.
I know that feeling.
In grade school, I’d rather sit alone in the playground.
In high school, I’d spend recess in the library reading Popular Electronics, something I got from my Dad, who loved electronics and was a mechanic, just like his siblings - the late Pres Ramon Magsaysay and Jesus Magsaysay (JessMag)
In college, I was alone more than I wanted to be partly by temperament, partly because I didn’t have money to socialize.
When I started working, I felt inferior.
Others were louder.
More confident.
More articulate.
I didn’t know how to talk to girls.
I didn’t know how to dominate a room.
Now I know something I wish I understood earlier:
Being introverted was not my weakness.
It was my OPERATING SYSTEM.
-
Why Introverts Win (Quietly)
Introverts:
• observe before acting
• think before speaking
• recharge alone
• go deep instead of wide
• are comfortable without applause
In a noisy world, depth is rare.
And depth compounds.
-
Filipino Quiet Achievers
We often assume leaders must be extroverts.
But look closer.
Business & Leadership
• Diosdado Banatao – Silicon Valley deep focus & technical mastery.
• Tony Tan Caktiong – humble, observant; lets execution speak louder.
• Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala – analytical, structured, measured.
Entertainment & Arts
• Dennis Trillo – intense on-screen, reserved off-camera.
• Jodi Sta. Maria – prefers quiet preparation over loud attention.
• Arthur Nery – powerful stage presence, soft-spoken in real life.
• Ansis Sy – loud online persona, quiet and introspective off-screen.
• Bella Poarch – globally visible, personally reserved.
Sports — The Masters of Focus
• Efren “Bata” Reyes – soft-spoken, calm under pressure.
• Carlos Yulo – built excellence through solitary discipline.
• Hidilyn Diaz – relied on inner circle and mental resilience.
• June Mar Fajardo – dominant on court, gentle & reserved off it.
• Stephen Loman – humble, explosive only in competition.
Notice the pattern.
They don’t perform personality.
They perform mastery.
-
Why Introverts Excel
1. Lower emotional baseline
They don’t spike easily. Under pressure, they stay regulated.
2. Comfort with solitude
Mastery often requires thousands of lonely hours. Introverts don’t fear that.
3. Humility as armor
In Filipino culture, quiet strength protects focus. Less distraction, more execution.
-
The Turning Point
At some point, I stopped wishing I was louder.
Instead I asked:
What can I do because I am wired this way?
I realized:
• I could see patterns others missed.
• I could think long-term.
• I didn’t need applause to stay steady.
• I didn’t panic in chaos.
Introversion became leverage.
-
5 Ways to Like Yourself If You’re an Introvert
1. Stop comparing energy styles. Loud ≠ capable.
2. Protect solitude. It’s fuel, not isolation.
3. Develop depth. Mastery beats charisma long-term.
4. Speak when it matters. Scarcity builds authority.
5. Redefine confidence. It’s steadiness, not volume.
-
The Real Truth
Extroverts energize the room.
Introverts understand the room.
Both matter.
But if you are introverted, stop apologizing for it.
You are not behind.
You are built for depth.
⸻
JOMAG VERDICT
You don’t need to dominate the room.
You need to understand the game.
And sometimes, the quietest person in the room
is the one who sees the board most clearly.
Note: Research suggests that roughly 70% of CEOs describe themselves as introverts, often excelling because they are better at listening to proactive employees and making calculated, data-driven decisions.
